    Description

Vintage Automatic-Electric Monophone 2 -Line Desk Telephone This is a rare and hard to find 1946 vintage Automatic-Electric "Monophone" 2-line desk phone, No. GN10. Phone has cut off corners with Bakelite base and hand set. The front has a row of four black buttons - two on one side numbered H, A1 and two on the other - A2, H.
The Automatic Electric Model 40 Monophone was introduced in 1938. This combined phone includes all the components required to operate within the casing, eliminating the need for an external network subset and ringer. The AE40 is a graceful example of art deco design. These rugged phones were made of solid bakelite and were available in a variety of colours with various trim options
Automatic Electric spent most of its history as a subsidiary of another company. By the mid-1950s, Automatic Electric employed about 8,000 Chicago-area residents at a complex of 17 buildings on the West Side. In 1955, Automatic Electric became a subsidiary of the nation's second-largest telephone company, which was headquartered in New York. The bottom of the telephone has original label. The label has patent dates with the latest from 1946. See picture of label below. The base is 5-1/4" wide and 8" deep and it's 4-1/4" high without the handset. This hard to find "Monophone" 2-line phone is sure to add to any vintage telephone collection! This phone is in very good vintage condition. Phone comes with original handset and cord. Black Bakelite case and handset show only very minor surface wear. We don't know if it works or not, we have no way to test it. See pictures for details. A great addition to any vintage telephone collection!
